A shiver went down my spine last week at the airport. I was struck with a moment of panic. I was at SFO security and saw a new line for people who have the Real ID. To fly domestically after May 7th, we will have to present a Real ID or a passport.

May 7th is the deadline for the Real ID, marking the day we will again become a two-tier society. Pictures of our future flashed in my mind, as I realized this is the start of a permanent two-tier society. For anyone without a Real ID, life will get more difficult, less convenient, and involve public shame when access is denied. It will be just like our first two-tier society, created with vaccine passports.

The Real ID is the federal identification card replacing the state-issued driver license. If you renewed your driver license recently and didn’t decline the Real ID, you have a star on your California Bear. That’s the Real ID. It is the next stepping stone for the Digital ID, which will eventually contain your social credit score.

My future visions were also triggered by the TSA agent who pretends the new security photo is mandatory, while signage says it’s voluntary. When you decline, they respond with huffy theatrics as they ask you to hand over your lesser-than state driver license. Then they examine your face, then your card, then your face, as if they are studying for a recall test they’ll have to pass later. Meanwhile, if you submit to the photo, your biometric data is being captured and put into a federal database. Your likeness is now linked with your personal identification data. That data will likely be accessible through your future Real ID.

In the future, we won’t recognize TSA as it is today. It may feel like pre-TSA days since you’ll just walk through security and your face will connect to your ID in a database, and you’ll just keep walking to your gate.

But it won’t be the same. It will be the surveillance state.

Your social credit score data will also be connected to your Real ID. Someday, you won’t get to keep walking to your gate if your social credit score is too low. You’ll be pulled aside, aggressively, by militarized police, I imagine.

How many social credit scores will govern our “freedom?” We already have a FICO score which affects interest rates at which you can borrow. Your COVID vaccination status was your second social credit score. What if your life were spent gaming dozens of different social credit scores daily just to be “free” in society?

I will continue to refuse the Digital ID. If they cannot force a critical mass of us onto the Real ID, it cannot be enforced and we may be able to get the deadline pushed out again, as they have been doing for years. That would buy us time to petition the Trump administration to stop this massive infringement on our privacy, freedom and civil rights.
